Chiaroscuro Wood Block Relief Printing
Saturday 11 October 2025 - Scarborough
Available spaces
During this one-day workshop, Ian will introduce the art of Chiaroscuro wood block relief printing. You will produce a chiaroscuro print with two blocks and limited colour (black and white) on Japanese paper. These are all hand-printed with a minimum of equipment and no printing press is required as each image will be hand burnished. The prints of Albrecht Dürer form the starting point of the print as this artist’s work was arguably the first example of Chiaroscuro woodblock printing in Europe (after his death). Drawing is not essential as this is a print workshop aimed at learning the relief block technique and how to register two related blocks. Awagami - the Japanese paper company, kindly has made sample packs of their papers available for the workshop. This workshop could be of particular value for art teachers, artists and art students with limited working space as it can all be executed on a table top. Ian was born in Saltburn, grew up in Redcar and worked on oil rigs before embarking on his art career. Today, after two decades as Drawing Master at Eton College, Ian now devotes himself to producing paintings and prints in his studio at home on the North Yorkshire Moors. Much of his work is inspired by the local environment, particularly the village of Staithes on the Yorkshire coast where Ian lived for four years. Children over 14 years old are welcome to attend unaccompanied.
