Saturday 17th January 2026 - NYAS Scarborough
Available spaces
Discover the joy of working with clay in this immersive one-day hand-build ceramics workshop at North Yorks Art School, led by Karen Thompson, an experienced ceramicist passionate about guiding makers of all levels. Perfect for beginners and seasoned creators alike, this hands-on session introduces fundamental hand-building techniques to create unique, functional, or decorative pottery pieces, such as a decorative vase, personalised mug, or sculptural ornament. Set in the vibrant, community-focused environment of North Yorks Art School, this workshop offers a friendly and fun atmosphere where you’ll explore the tactile art of ceramics, bringing your ideas to life with expert guidance. With clay’s rich history and versatile applications, you’ll leave with a finished piece (fired post-workshop) and the skills to continue your ceramics journey. You'll start with pinch pots, shaping simple bowls or small containers by pinching and molding clay with your hands. Next, try coil building, layering coils of clay to form vases, plant pots, or sculptural figures, adding texture and organic flow to your design. Finally, master slab building, rolling out flat clay pieces to construct items like trays, plates, or a box with clean lines and structure. Karen will demonstrate each technique, offering tips on achieving smooth surfaces, joining clay securely, and adding decorative elements like textures or carved patterns. You’ll have the creative freedom to choose from suggested projects or why not design your own. This is a fun, hands-on day with clear instructions, individual support. Your finished piece will be fired post-workshop and is normally ready for collection within three-weeks. Children over 8 years old are welcome to attend this workshop if accompanied by a paying adult. Children over 14 years old are welcome to attend unaccompanied.
