Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th January 2026 - Henshaws, Knaresborough
Available spaces
If you’ve never picked up a pencil with the intention to draw, or if you enjoy drawing but want to develop your skills, join us for an inspiring two-day introductory drawing workshop in the vibrant grounds of Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre, hosted by North Yorks Art School and led by Annie Quicke. With a degree in illustration and over 20 years of experience teaching art to adults and children, Annie brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for nurturing creativity, honed through her work as a muralist, window artist, fine artist and children’s book illustrator. This beginner-friendly workshop focuses on basic drawing technique from line, shading, depth, shape, and texture while teaching you how to harness observation skills and imagination to conquer the fear of a blank sheet of paper. Using a variety of media, from pencils, pens and charcoal, you’ll build skills to create a finished still life drawing by the end of the workshop. Under Annie's expert guidance, you’ll explore essential drawing techniques over two days, building confidence and creating a polished still life image. Day 1 - You’ll dive into line and shading, learning to use graphite pencils and charcoal to create clean outlines and dynamic tonal contrasts from natural forms or still life setups. Annie will teach you how to observe shapes and textures, guiding you through exercises to depict depth and form. Day 2 - You’ll focus on combining these skills with your imagination, experimenting with media like coloured pencils and ink to add texture and personality to your work. Annie’s encouraging approach, informed by her experience in children’s book illustration, will help you develop a composition, refine details, and produce a finished still life drawing that captures light, shadow and emotion.
