Join artist Kim Searle for an engaging one-day punch needle workshop at the welcoming Henshaws Arts and Crafts Centre in Knaresborough. Perfect for beginners or those seeking fresh inspiration, this hands-on session introduces you to the addictive world of punch needle, where you'll explore a vibrant array of yarns in different colours and textures to create your own textured artwork. You'll start with guided practice using four different types of punch needle tools and three varieties of foundation fabric, helping you discover what suits your style best. Once comfortable, you'll progress to designing and completing a larger piece, gaining confidence in the technique along the way. Whether you're a complete novice eager to learn a new skill or an experienced crafter looking for new ideas, this supportive workshop provides the ideal environment to unleash your creativity in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. Punch needle is a textured embroidery technique with roots in ancient practices, possibly dating back to ancient Egypt where hollow bird bones were used as tools, and medieval Europe for decorative textiles. Its modern form, particularly punch needle rug hooking, emerged in the late 19th century in North America, evolving from traditional rug hooking. In the 1880s, the invention of the punch needle tool revolutionized the craft by allowing loops to be "punched" downward efficiently, leading to a boom in cottage industries along the Eastern Seaboard. It provided livelihoods and creative outlets, producing durable rugs and wall hangings admired for their plush, looped pile. Separate traditions include fine Russian miniature punch needle (Igolochkoy) from Old Believer communities and Japanese Bunka embroidery. Today, punch needle's appeal lies in its speedy, therapeutic process creating raised, velvety textures with yarn and its versatility for modern wall art, cushions, and decor, blending historical charm with contemporary design. All materials including a variety of yarns, punch needle tools, hoops/frames, and foundation fabrics are provided for use during the workshop, along with pattern ideas and a handout of tips to take home.
