Join us for an inspiring weekend of artistic discovery at Cober Hill, nestled along the breathtaking North Yorkshire coast. Hosted by North Yorks Art School and led by Christopher Shaw, this weekend residential welcomes artists of all skill levels to hone their craft and explore new techniques, while connecting with a community of fellow creatives. The residential package includes two-night full board, en-suite accommodation in Cober Hill’s historic mansion house with breakfast and evening meals provided. You will attend your workshop, which includes all materials between 10am-4pm on Saturday with a buffet lunch included. Complimentary refreshments, including tea, coffee, and snacks, are available throughout the day in breakout areas. Check in begins at 3:00pm on Friday 9th January 2026 with check out by 10:30am on Sunday 11th January 2026. Workshop takes place 10am-4pm Saturday 10th January 2026. Workshop Details This session is all day and for all levels. Tuition is on hand from timekeeper and artist Chris Shaw with a focus on form (breaking appearances down to component parts and underlying geometry); values (looking at the shifts from darks to lights)... and, thirdly, application (mindfulness about the various ways charcoal, for instance, can be used and the results that can follow by e.g. pressing heavily, or lightly; using the nib or the side part; working swiftly or with more care). Life drawing is not necessarily an academic exercise. Objective reality, proportion, measuring can be turned on its head by those wanting to take a more subjective, expressive, even lighthearted approach... but for those wanting to be faithful to what they see, then Chris can help you get a good measure of the model. This, though, takes time and the sessions are best viewed as exercise. Life drawers puzzle out problems to do with transferring three dimensions into two. It's tiring work but a good session will return you to the world feeling you've been using your eyes properly. It's great for focussing the mind and lifting the spirits. There are a number of poses from a few shorter ones to begin with to poses that last up to 30 minutes. The cost of this residential includes 20% VAT (£53.33), as we are a VAT-registered business.
Cancellation Policy
All residentials are priced including VAT charged at 20%. By completing this purchase you are securing a place for a residential, including full board accommodation at Cober Hill. We understand that plans can change, so we’ve outlined our cancellation and rescheduling policies for our residentials to ensure clarity and flexibility. At North Yorks Art School (NYAS), we incur a number of costs as soon as a residential booking is made — including venue, tutor, bank charges and administration fees. Unfortunately, due to the increasing number of cancellations, we now need to pass on a portion of these costs to customers when cancellations occur. Rescheduling Your Booking You can reschedule your booking up to 8 weeks before the start date of your residential free of charge — provided you transfer your place to another NYAS residential event taking place at Cober Hill (subject to availability). Reschedules outside of this time will be subject to a 10% booking fee. We will confirm the change in writing and transfer your place accordingly. Cancellations & Refunds If you choose to cancel your booking rather than reschedule, the following cancellation fees will apply: Over 6 Months 90% Refund 4 to 6 months 80% refund 2 to 4 months 70% refund 31 to 60 days 50% refund 30 days or less No refund Refunds will be processed to your original payment method within 3–5 business days once the cancellation is confirmed. Your Right to Cancel (Cooling-Off Period) If you live in the UK or EU, you are entitled to a 14-day cancellation window from the date of booking. Within this period, you may cancel for a full refund without providing a reason. To exercise this right, contact us at info@bookaclass.org within the 14-day period.
