The Magic of Silk Painting Workshop
Saturday 5th September 2026 - Henshaws, Knaresborough
Available spaces
Discover the magical art of silk painting in this relaxing and creative one-day workshop. Perfect for complete beginners or those with some experience looking to explore new techniques, you'll learn how to create vibrant, flowing designs on luxurious silk using specialist dyes and resists. Silk painting is a fluid and forgiving medium that produces stunning results with minimal equipment. The dyes spread beautifully on the silk, allowing for bold colours, delicate washes, and intricate patterns. By the end of the day, you'll take home your own finished silk piece (such as a scarf, wall hanging, or framed artwork) that can be steamed to fix the colours for permanence. Silk painting is an ancient art form that originated in China over 2,000 years ago, during the Warring States period (475–221 BC). Silk was the preferred medium for painting long before paper or canvas, prized for its smooth texture, durability, and luminous quality. Artists prepared silk by smoothing it with stones and applied mineral pigments or ink using animal-hair brushes. Early works often featured calligraphy, mythological scenes, figures, and motifs like dragons and phoenixes. This workshop is held in the inspiring surroundings of Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre, with its light-filled studios and peaceful grounds, an ideal setting to unleash your creativity. Join us for a colourful and therapeutic day exploring the beauty of silk painting. You'll be amazed at what you can create.
