Tuesday History of Art: Learn & Discuss

Tuesdays 7pm - 9pm

15 British pounds
Scarborough - Pay-As-You-Go

In this set of four art history discussions, we will be looking at leading British artists of the 20th century, all of whom have made their mark on the development of painting, in particular. The social context and influences that impacted upon their work will also be considered. We offer a friendly space to discuss, listen and explore and gain a more informed overview of some of the many strands and connections that make up art history. Tuesday 13th January: Walter Sickert Sickert is important for his pivotal role in modern British art, bridging Impressionism and later movements within Modernism through his gritty urban scenes, theatrical subjects and innovative use of photography as source material, influencing groups like the Camden Town Group and individuals like Francis Bacon. Tuesday 20th January: Paul Nash Paul Nash is famous for bridging European avant-garde styles, such as Surrealism and Cubism, with the English landscape and also creating iconic, haunting war art. Nash founded the modern art group Unit One and powerfully depicted landscape destruction and rebirth, blending dreamscapes with reality. Tuesday 27th January: Laura Knight Dame Laura Knight broke barriers for women in art, becoming the first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy in over a century. She celebrated modern life, depicting marginalised communities and also served as a war artist, famously documenting the Nuremberg Trials. Tuesday 3rd February: Lucian Freud Lucian Freud revolutionised 20th-century portraiture with his brutal, psychological and physically raw depictions of the human body, challenging conventions by capturing his subjects' vulnerability and interior selves through laborious, realistic painting, influencing generations of figurative artists. 7pm-9pm with Linda Polkowski. Refreshments provided. This pay-as-you-go class takes place at: North Yorks Art School 2-4 South Street Scarborough YO11 2BP
