Step back in time and rediscover the charm, anticipation, and magic of shooting and developing real film photography in this hands-on 35mm film workshop. In an age of instant digital images, this workshop celebrates the slow, tactile, and deeply rewarding process of traditional analogue photography. You will experience the full creative journey from loading film into a camera to developing your own black and white negatives and take home a genuine set of film photographs you created yourself. Led by experienced photographer and tutor Bob Smith, this workshop is perfect for beginners and those with some experience who want to explore or rediscover the beautiful world of film. What the day includes: Introduction to 35mm film photography, choosing and loading a camera (you’re welcome to bring your own 35mm camera, but not essential), understanding exposure, focusing, and composition. Practical Photography Expedition: - Head out as a group into the local area to capture images on film. You’ll learn by doing, with guidance on light reading, exposure, framing, and composition. - Return to develop your own film. You will learn how to load your film into developing tanks, mix chemicals, and process your black and white negatives. Watch your images magically appear as the film dries. - Review your negatives, discuss the results as a group, and scan them to create digital files ready for printing. Workshop Details: - All film, chemicals, and processing equipment provided - Lunch and refreshments included - Small group for plenty of individual guidance - You take home your own set of developed negatives and digital scans Bob brings a wealth of experience to the workshop. With a BA in Fine Art and an MA in Archaeology, he worked as a professional photographer for over 25 years and was a curator of collections at English Heritage until 2019. Bob is passionate about the craft and history of analogue photography and loves sharing the unique satisfaction that comes from working with real film.
