Join us for an inspiring one-day acrylic painting workshop set in the grounds of Henshaws Arts and Crafts centre, hosted by North Yorks Art School and led by Christopher Shaw, Head of North Yorks Art School. This one-day acrylic painting workshop for beginners starts with a basic introduction to the materials we will be using. Shortly after, we'll get on with mixing paint and thinking about values (darks and lights). Our first exercise is to complete a painting using only two colours - burnt umber and white. To achieve this, you will be provided with a gridded image. You will create a corresponding grid on canvas paper and begin sketching in your composition. Those feeling more confident about getting their proportions right without a grid, are encouraged to do so. After lunch, participants will learn how to mix colour using a set of cool and warm primary colours (red, blue and yellow). Wasting no time, we will begin a full-colour painting. Your tutor Chris will encourage and coach you, providing individual as well as group tuition. This workshop will give you a good knowledge of the materials you will need to carry on painting at home. You will learn how to mix warm and cool colours creating good tonal variation along the way. You will also gain insights into the importance of contrasting values ensuring your paintings have good lights and darks. You will also hear lots during the workshop about technique and application. Application is a personal matter, improving over time and is really about temperament and attitude, what tools you use to paint with and the pace at which you paint. It is this sort of thing that creates individual style. All materials - acrylic paints, brushes, canvas paper, and pallet knife - are provided in a kit for you to take home. Saturday 6th March 2027 10am - 4pm with Christopher Shaw This workshop takes place at: Henshaws Art & Crafts Centre 50 Bond End Knaresborough HG5 9AL Includes all materials, refreshments and lunch.
