Set in the welcoming hub of North Yorks Art School, this workshop fosters a friendly and inspiring atmosphere, ensuring you leave with a beautiful batik creation and the skills to explore this expressive craft further. Batik, an ancient textile technique originating in Indonesia over 2,000 years ago, is celebrated for its intricate patterns created through a wax resist process, where molten wax is applied to cloth before dyeing to preserve specific areas. From Javanese ceremonial cloths to vibrant African and Indian textiles, batik has spread globally, with each culture adding unique motifs, from floral designs to geometric pattern. Traditionally, artisans used tjanting tools or fine brushes to apply wax, followed by dyes that penetrate unwaxed areas, creating striking contrasts. Today, batik is valued for its versatility, producing wearable art, home decor, or fine art panels and its sustainability, using natural fabrics like cotton and eco-friendly dyes. This workshop introduces you to the meditative and creative process of batik, empowering you to craft functional or decorative pieces with minimal tools, blending tradition with personal expression. You’ll begin by learning to use tools like tjantings (spouted tools for precise wax application) and brushes, applying molten wax to cotton fabric to create resist patterns. Rachael will guide you through selecting and mixing dyes, teaching safe application techniques to achieve vibrant, layered colours while ensuring compatibility with the fabric. You’ll explore how to build intricate patterns and add texture through wax layers. Friday 22nd January 2027 10am - 4pm with Rachael Forest This workshop takes place at: North Yorks Art School 2-4 South Street Scarborough YO11 2BP This workshop includes all materials, tote bag, refreshments and lunch.
