Beginner's Drawing: Six-Week Course

Starts Thursday 15th April 2027 - Scarborough with Christopher Shaw

165 British pounds
Scarborough - South Street

Available spaces

This 6-week course is designed to introduce beginners to the fundamentals of drawing. Each session will build on essential techniques, helping you develop your confidence and skills through hands-on practice and guided instruction. By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid foundation in drawing and the tools to continue exploring your creativity. Week 1: Transposition Let's start at the beginning. Using a grid and charcoal, you will sit at an easel and recreate the head of a statue. This exercise will be good for looking at dark and light values and for getting to know the properties of charcoal and how you might best use it. Week 2: Still Life Let's break down forms, shadows and light. Get to know different surfaces from reflective to textured. You'll use various materials including charcoal and water-soluable pen - two sorts of materials you'll get to know in the coming weeks. Week 3: Urban Sketch Method Using pictures of Scarborough landmarks or any other picture you want to bring in, you will look at drawings made on the go, taking in the tools and materials best used to capture fleeting impressions. Week 4: Self Portrait Let's take a look in the mirror. Following a few loosening-up exercises, you will use two mirrors to create drawings of your own face: a small compact mirror to help focus on individual features and a larger one to take in the whole. Week 5: Life Drawing Using a nude model, you will explore the human form. The model will adopt a series of poses - anything from 2 minutes to 25 minutes in duration. Week 6: Transposition Let's end where we began with another transposition exercise. During the class, Chris will recap our journey and encourage you to find ways of carrying after the course ends. This course is an introduction to drawing but it's also good for those wanting weekly, structured exercise away from the distractions you'll find at home. The course is designed to give you something to look forward to, where you can set some time aside to concentrate on form, line and shade as well as your own technique. Drawing helps us look more closely at the world around us and can help slow down how we experience things. Every Thursday 15th April - 20th May 2027 10am - 12.30pm with Christopher Shaw This workshop takes place at: North Yorks Art School 2-4 South Street Scarborough YO11 2BP Includes all materials and refreshments.
