Join us for an enchanting, hands-on journey into the art of botanical bas relief, where the delicate beauty of flowers and foliage meets the timeless elegance of plaster casting. In this experimental one-day workshop, you'll discover the magic of transforming fresh botanicals into stunning, low-relief sculptures, capturing the intricate textures and forms of nature in enduring plaster tiles. Perfect for artists, gardeners, and nature enthusiasts alike, this session blends creativity with mindfulness, allowing you to create personalized pieces that echo the wild charm of your own surroundings. Bas relief, derived from the French term meaning "low relief," is an ancient sculptural technique where designs are carved or moulded to project subtly from a flat background, creating a sense of depth without full three-dimensionality. Dating back over 5,000 years, it adorned the walls of Egyptian tombs, Greek temples, and Roman triumphal arches, often depicting mythological scenes, battles, or natural motifs to tell stories in stone. The botanical application of bas relief gained prominence during the Renaissance and flourished in the Victorian era, when a fascination with nature, fuelled by botanical explorations and the Arts and Crafts movement led artists to immortalize flowers, leaves, and vines in decorative panels, friezes, and garden ornaments. Pioneers like Della Robbia in Italy used glazed terracotta for floral reliefs, while in Britain, figures such as William Morris drew from wild meadows to infuse everyday objects with organic beauty. Today, contemporary artists revive this tradition through plaster casting, preserving ephemeral botanicals in a medium that's both accessible and evocative, blending historical craftsmanship with modern eco-conscious creativity. Tara is a passionate artist based in the picturesque town of Ilkley, West Yorkshire, where she specialises in casting flowers and foliage inspired by the rugged beauty of the surrounding countryside. Drawing from the dramatic landscapes of the Yorkshire Moorland its heather-clad hills, ancient woodlands, and seasonal blooms creating ethereal works that celebrate nature's fleeting wonders. With a background in fine arts and a deep connection to her environment, Tara's teaching style is warm, encouraging, and rooted in experimentation.
