Immerse yourself in the rich, tactile world of collagraph printmaking on this inspiring course led by printmaker Vicky Oldfield. Known for her expressive, layered work and experimental approach to surface and texture, Vicky brings a wealth of experience as both a practising artist and an encouraging, hands-on tutor. Her work often combines traditional printmaking techniques with a contemporary, mixed-media sensibility, making her the perfect guide for this exploratory process. Throughout your stay, you’ll explore the creative potential of collagraph printing, a wonderfully versatile technique that allows you to build your own textured printing plates using a wide range of materials. Working from simple cardboard bases, you’ll layer, seal, ink, and print your plates to produce unique and characterful images. This course is suitable for all levels, including complete beginners. Whether you’re new to printmaking or looking to expand your existing practice, you’ll be supported every step of the way. The course begins with a series of clear, tutor-led demonstrations, where Vicky will introduce the fundamentals of collagraph construction, inking methods, and printing techniques using an etching press. You’ll then move into hands-on experimentation, exploring mark-making, testing textures, and creating sample plates to understand how different materials and approaches translate into print. As your confidence grows, you’ll develop your own plates and compositions, with guidance on selecting appropriate papers and refining your ideas. You’ll also be introduced to the beautiful technique of chine collé, which allows you to incorporate delicate layers of colour and paper directly into your prints, opening up exciting new creative possibilities. There will be plenty of time for individual support, discussion, and creative exploration, all within the relaxed and inspiring environment of a residential setting. Evenings offer the chance to unwind, reflect, and connect with fellow participants. The course concludes with an informal group sharing session, where you can review your work, exchange feedback, and celebrate your progress. Classes take place 10am-4pm Tuesday - Thursday and 10am-12pm Friday. Includes all equipment and materials needed as well as access to evening activities taking place in and around Cober Hill.
