Early Medieval Colours: Frescoes, Manuscripts, Pigments, Inks & Binders
Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th September 2027 - Cober Hill, Scarborough - Weekend Break Available
In this two day workshop, you will learn about the colours, pigments, surfaces and binders used in the early medieval era in Scotland and further afield. You will make and use authentic ink, paint and pigments that would have used by artists when crafting medieval manuscripts and wall paintings. You will also learn about artistic styles from the time and how imagery was formed through a fusion of influence connecting artists across the world. Over the course of the two days you will prepare and work onto various surfaces including a fresco panel and wooden board. You will then learn techniques in re-creating medieval imagery and use authentic medieval art materials to paint your own pieces of medieval inspired art. You will go home with your artworks and a selection of authentic paints, ink and your own hand crafted pen, all made following traditional recipes and techniques. Over the course of the two days you will: - Create, from scratch, your own small fresco panel and paint a medieval inspired image/copy onto the panel using authentic pigments. - Prepare paints using binders traditionally used in the medieval era and see how they are applicable to create sustainable paints today. - Make historical ink and bottle it to take home. - Craft a traditional pen to use during the workshop and to take home. Using source material from illuminated manuscripts, paint your own A5 wooden panel using historical inks and paints. Edward and Lucy Campbell will be guiding you through this workshop and have both been practicing artists for the last twenty years working in a range of mediums and disciplines. During the last ten years, they have founded an arts centre in a village located in Southwest Scotland which has evolved into Old Mill Arts.
