Exploring Watercolour with Louisa Boyd
Day Student at Cober Hill Tuesday 24th - Thursday 26th August 2027
Available spaces
Join multidisciplinary artist Louisa Boyd for an inspiring watercolour workshop at Cober Hill. This course invites you to explore watercolour in a more experimental and intuitive way, embracing the unpredictable qualities that make the medium unique. Working with broad brush marks, flowing washes, and spontaneous effects, you will be encouraged to let go of expectations and approach the process with curiosity and openness. Not every experiment will lead to a finished piece, but each one will contribute to your understanding of the medium. We will begin with some work developing a personal colour palette and then move onto expressive mark-making exercises using wet media, creating abstract starting points that can later be developed and refined with a range of dry materials. Through these initial explorations, you will learn to respond to the marks and shapes that emerge, discovering imagery and compositions through observation and instinct rather than careful planning. As the course progresses, you will investigate how abstract forms can suggest elements of the natural world, using these discoveries as inspiration for landscape-based paintings. Along the way, you will gain practical experience with watercolour techniques including washes, wet-on-wet application, and the creative use of blooms and back runs to introduce movement, atmosphere, and texture into your work. You will also explore ways of integrating drawing media with watercolour to enrich and develop your paintings. You will explore: - Working with limited palettes to create harmony and atmosphere - Capturing light, space, and movement in the landscape - Layering, glazing, and textural techniques - Simplifying what you see into strong, poetic compositions - Developing confidence in your own artistic voice All materials are provided, and the workshop is suitable for all abilities. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from a practicing professional artist whose work has a distinctive and thoughtful approach to watercolour. The workshops takes place at: Cober Hill Cloughton Scarborough North Yorkshire YO13 0AR The workshops runs daily from from 10am to 4pm. Please arrive at Cober Hill between 9.30am and 9.45am for refreshments before heading to the studio for a prompt 10am start. Includes all materials and lunch.
