Botanical Prints & Creative Layering at North Yorks Art School Join us for a fun and inspiring one-day Gelli Plate Printmaking workshop at North Yorks Art School, where you’ll discover the joy of creating beautiful, unique prints using this versatile and addictive printing technique. Gelli plates offer endless creative possibilities for monoprinting without the need for a press. Their soft, responsive surface captures wonderful textures and details, making them perfect for both beginners and those with some printmaking experience. Botanical Prints & Textures We’ll begin the day with an introduction to the equipment and materials, including Gelli plates, brayers, acrylic paints, and a variety of papers. You’ll receive helpful handouts covering the techniques, plate care, and colour combinations, along with the chance to browse a portfolio of inspiring Gelli plate collages. You’ll then explore working with natural materials including, leaves, flowers, grasses, and other botanicals, using them as masks and textures on the plate. This session focuses on colour mixing, composition, and layering as you experiment with different papers (including delicate rice paper, cartridge, and everyday photocopy paper) to see how each affects the final print. Stencils, Layering & Creative Exploration later, you’ll build on your morning prints by introducing stencils to add shape, pattern, and visual interest. You’ll learn how to create depth and complexity through multiple layers, combining botanical elements with stencils to produce rich, dynamic, and contemporary artwork. Your tutor will demonstrate various approaches and help you discover your own creative direction. This workshop encourages experimentation, play, and personal expression in a relaxed and supportive environment. By the end of the day, you’ll have created a wonderful collection of unique Gelli prints to take home.
