Join printmaker Alan Coates for an immersive one-day workshop and discover the art of intaglio printmaking. This hands-on session introduces you to the time-honored technique of etching, a process rooted in centuries of artistic tradition. You’ll create your own unique composition by etching onto an aluminium plate, then learn the skills of inking, wiping, and printing using a traditional etching press. By the end of the day, you’ll take home a series of distinctive prints, each a testament to your creativity. No prior experience is needed, and all materials are provided, along with refreshments and a delicious lunch. The workshop uses a safe, acid-free etching solution of copper sulphate and common salt, making it accessible and environmentally friendly. Intaglio, derived from the Italian word intagliare (to carve), is a printmaking technique dating back to the 15th century. Historically used by artists like Rembrandt and Dürer, it involves incising a design into a metal plate, which holds ink in its grooves to create richly detailed prints. This workshop preserves the essence of this traditional craft while using modern, non-toxic methods, allowing you to explore a historic art form with contemporary ease. Alan, a passionate printmaker, began his artistic journey after retiring from the NHS in 2014. He honed his etching skills during an Art Foundation Course in York, where he exhibited locally. Now based in the picturesque village of Faceby, Alan draws inspiration from the North Yorkshire moors. What You’ll Learn - The principles of intaglio printing and plate preparation - How to etch your design onto an aluminium plate - Techniques for inking and wiping your plate - Operating an etching press to produce multiple unique prints This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn a historic craft in a supportive, small-group setting.
