Saturday 12th June 2027 - NYAS Scarborough with Richard Burton
Available spaces
Join us for a one-day watercolour workshop at North Yorks Art School, led by Richard Burton, a skilled watercolour artist with a passion for capturing the beauty of nature through vibrant, fluid brushwork. This beginner-friendly workshop welcomes both novices and experienced painters, guiding you through essential watercolour techniques to create a stunning nature-inspired painting, such as a coastal scene, floral study, or landscape, reflecting North Yorkshire’s breath-taking scenery. You’ll explore foundational skills like washes, layering, and texture, using student-grade materials to bring your vision to life. This workshop offers a supportive and creative atmosphere, ensuring you leave with a finished watercolour painting and the confidence to continue your artistic journey. Watercolour painting, with roots tracing back to ancient Egypt and China, where it was used for manuscripts and scrolls, gained prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries through artists like J.M.W. Turner, who celebrated its luminous, translucent qualities. Known for its portability and minimal materials of paint, brushes, paper, and water, watercolour is an accessible medium that produces delicate yet vibrant artworks, ideal for capturing landscapes, botanicals, or abstracts. You’ll begin by exploring watercolour materials, paints, brushes, and paper, learning techniques like flat and graded washes to create smooth backgrounds. Richard will demonstrate wet-in-wet and dry brush methods, guiding you to paint initial layers inspired by North Yorkshire’s moors, coastlines, townscapes using provided reference images. You’ll practice controlling water and pigment to achieve soft gradients and bold details. You'll build on your foundation, focusing on layering, glazing, and texturing to add depth and nuance to your painting. Richard will provide personalised feedback, helping you refine your composition and complete a vibrant artwork. Saturday 12th June 2027 10am - 4pm with Richard Burton This class takes place at: North Yorks Art School 2-4 South Street Scarborough YO11 2BP
