Join acclaimed British artist Adam Riches for this immersive three-day workshop at the beautiful Cober Hill country house. This workshop brings together the best of Adam’s popular online drawing sessions and translates them into an in-person, intensive experience focused on bold, expressive drawing. Adam’s distinctive style centres on energetic mark-making, layered ballpoint pen work, and psychologically charged figurative and portrait drawing. Over the week, you will explore his unique approach to building depth, character, and emotion through spontaneous yet controlled drawing techniques. What the week includes: You will begin by exploring Adam’s methods for working directly from reference and imagination. Through a series of structured sessions, you’ll learn how to create dynamic, textured drawings using ballpoint pen and mixed drawing media. Adam will guide you through his process of building layers, embracing imperfection, and developing powerful, introspective figurative work. The week is designed to help you loosen up, gain confidence with expressive mark-making, and produce strong, personal drawings. You’ll benefit from Adam’s individual feedback, group critiques, and demonstrations throughout the residential. Workshop Highlights: - Introduction to the way Adam draws, using tonal values to create depth, form, and atmosphere. - Drawing from a reference images, using observation as a foundation while learning how to transform the source material into something new, and unique. - Drawing from imagination, allowing the process and the marks themselves to guide the image, creating work in a spontaneous and uninhibited way without a fixed plan. - Working with white ink on black paper, using light rather than shadow to build form. This week is ideal for artists who want to move beyond basic drawing skills and develop a bolder, more expressive approach to their work. Whether you’re an intermediate artist or a confident beginner looking to push your practice, Adam’s encouraging and insightful teaching style will help you create work you’re truly proud of. The workshops takes place at: Cober Hill Cloughton Scarborough North Yorkshire YO13 0AR The workshops runs daily from from 10am to 4pm. Please arrive at Cober Hill between 9.30am and 9.45am for refreshments before heading to the studio for a prompt 10am start. Includes all materials and lunch.
Cancellation Policy
All Classes, Courses, Workshops and Masterclasses are priced including VAT charged at 20%. By completing this purchase you are securing a place for the Masterclass and accommodation at Cober Hill. We understand that plans can change, so we’ve outlined our cancellation and rescheduling policies for our masterclass and accommodation at Ampleforth Abbey to ensure clarity and flexibility. Masterclass Rescheduling: You can reschedule your booking up to 4 weeks before the start of the masterclass. We will transfer your booking to an alternative date and provide written confirmation of the change. Cancellations: You may cancel your booking up to 4 weeks before the masterclass for a full refund, which will be processed to your original payment method within 3–5 business days. Within 4 Weeks of the Event: Cancellations made less than 4 weeks before the masterclass will not be refunded. However, if we are able to rebook your place within the 4 week period we will be able to process a full refund. Accommodation Rescheduling: Accommodation can be rescheduled up to 6 weeks before your stay, subject to availability. We will confirm the new booking details in writing. Cancellations: You may cancel your accommodation booking up to 6 weeks before your stay for a full refund. Within 6 Weeks of the Stay: Cancellations made within 6 weeks of the arrival date will incur a 50% cancellation fee. If we are able to rebook your accommodation, we will refund the remaining balance to your original payment method. Your Right to Cancel If you are a customer living in the United Kingdom or the European Union you have the right to cancel your contract to purchase services from us within 14 days of purchase without giving notice. The cancellation period will end 14 days from the date of purchase when you purchased a service.
