Join us for what promises to be an unforgettable week at Cober Hill foraging for and creating heritage art materials - an opportunity to learn, create and make new friends with like-minded people. This immersive experience invites you to craft your own art materials from foraged and natural sources, blending hands-on creativity with historical insight. Led by our super-friendly expert instructors, Edward and Lucy, you’ll connect deeply with the environment around you while producing a unique kit to take home. Areas of focus Inks Forage local plants and minerals to create historic recipes like iron gall ink - the writing ink of choice for 1,500 years from Europe to the Himalayas. Experience using your iron gall ink as both a writing and drawing medium. Pigments and Paints Process natural earths into vibrant pigments, then transform them into paints and pastels for immediate use. Clay Containers Shape clay using ancient techniques and fire the products of your labour in a neolithic-style pit to craft rustic vessels. Brushes and Pens Fashion tools from feathers, sticks and other natural finds, learning about their cultural significance along the way. The Experience This workshop is more than a class; it’s a journey. You’ll roam the Cober Hill grounds, gathering inspiration and materials, and enjoy a supportive, collaborative atmosphere. Whether you’re an artist, historian, or nature enthusiast, you’ll leave with new skills, a deeper appreciation for the landscape, and a bespoke collection of handmade supplies to fuel your future work. Edward and Lucy Campbell have both been practising artists for the last twenty years working in a range of mediums and disciplines. During the last ten years, they have founded an arts centre in a village located in Southwest Scotland which has evolved into Old Mill Arts. Classes take place 10am-4pm Tuesday - Thursday and 10am-12pm Friday. Includes all equipment and materials needed as well as access to evening activities taking place in and around Cober Hill.
