Tuesday History of Art Learn & Discuss
Tuesdays 7pm - 9pm
In this set of four art history discussions, we will be looking at pairs of European masters, all of whom have made their mark on the development of painting, in particular. The social context and influences that impacted upon their work will also be considered. We offer a friendly space to discuss, listen and explore and also to have a more informed overview of some of the many strands and connections that make up art history. European Masters (1592-1828) Tuesday 15th September 2026: Caravaggio and Gentileschi Caravaggio broke with Renaissance ideals and experimented with Baroque realism, dramatic compositions and intense lighting techniques. His follower, Artemisia Gentileschi broke through gender barriers to become an internationally recognized female master. She redefined how women, trauma, and physical power were depicted on canvas. Tuesday 22nd September 2026: Velázquez and Zurbarán Velázquez and Zurbarán were the main pillars of the Spanish Golden Age and the Baroque period. Velázquez, the court painter, is known for his optical realism and radical explorations of human psychology. Zurbarán, the “Spanish Caravaggio” painted more ecclesiastical subjects and inspired future realists such as Courbet with his monumental artworks Tuesday 29th September 2026: Rembrandt and Vermeer These masters of the Dutch Golden Age are feted for their psychological insight, domestic, everyday interiors and use of chiaroscuro. Rembrandt is also known for his astounding exploration of self-portraiture and Vermeer for interiors of studied intimacy. Tuesday 6th October 2026: Goya and Delacroix Goya is respected as a main “bridge to modernism”, his art evolving towards social critique, especially the cost of human conflict. Delacroix, the romantic, rejected neoclassicism in favour of emotion, drama and symbolism and also explored colour theory. 7pm-9pm with Linda Polkowski. Refreshments provided. You can pay in full at the time of booking via card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or PayPal, Cash payment can be made in person at the school or shop. Cancellation Policy Our Cancellation & Refund Policy (applies alongside statutory rights): • More than 7 days before the class: Full refund minus £5 administration fee, or a full credit to your customer bundle. • Between 7 days and 48 hours before the class: At our discretion, we may offer a rescheduled place within the following month. No refund will be given. • Less than 48 hours before the class or after the class has started: You will forfeit the full amount paid. No refund or credit to a bundle will be issued. Rescheduling / Transfers Rescheduling is only available at our discretion as outlined above. You may transfer your place to another person with at least 48 hours’ notice, subject to our approval.
